"Footprints in New York" by Kaoru Azuma is a fantastic modern jazz album brought to life by a talented jazz vocalist. Kaoru, though born in Osaka, Japan, has honed her craft as an American singer and will leave you feeling musically satisfied and pleasantly soothed. She has certainly made her way around the New York jazz scene and her experience and poise shines through on her smooth, graceful vocal performances. The musicians behind her are certainly no slouches either. The performances are solid and the arrangements are creative, lively, well-layered, and compliment the vocals well. The album is well-produced, reflecting a perfect balance of instrumentation and vocals, and illuminates a sound that is very crisp and smooth. "High Wire" opens things up with a haunting vocal intro and evolves into an upbeat performance, both in the arrangement and in the vocal performance. "Footprints" invokes images of a smoky, low-lit room and features a great tandem between Kaoru's voice and the trombone. This track is fantastically heavy on the mood. "Turn Out The Stars" wraps things up with nice piano progressions that gives the hint of closure and an intimate vocal performance from Kaoru. This album will leave any lover of crafty and soul-filled modern jazz wanting more.-William

"Calm Breeze" by The Derrick Finch Trio (Jazz Artist from Los Angeles, California(CA))

RadioIndy is pleased to present The Derrick Finch Trio with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Calm Breeze"

"Calm Breeze" is a great, live traditional jazz album from The Derrick Finch Trio. Finch is a student of jazz piano influenced by the likes of Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson and reflects this with great classical and traditional and avant-garde jazz arrangements reminiscent of his predecessors. His accompaniment, sometimes going beyond the implied trio, includes great stand-up bass lines, occasional saxophone solos, and classic jazz drumming. "Sing me a Song...please!" by Lynette Louise (Jazz Artist from California(CA))

RadioIndy is pleased to present Lynette Louise with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Sing me a Song...please!"

"Sing me a Song...please!" is truly an original album from singer/songwriter Lynette Louise that draws from both mainstream jazz and honky tonk country. Lynette's loungy vocal performance pairs nicely with either genre, and she takes full advantage of this with incredibly diverse and solid arrangements. Lynette is a renowned international autism expert, having taken a number of children with autism and other special needs under her wing and caring for them like family. This selfless life experience certainly glimmers forth in her songs. She is a great lyrical storyteller, as she sings about the importance of love, both toward God and children, and, as a listener, you hang onto every word. "Sing me a Song...please!" is well-recorded, and Lynette's lyrics pierce through the arrangements perfectly. "Sing Me a Song" is a jazzy and lyrical number with great yearning vocal delivery and a nice build-up. "Used to Listen" gives the listener a first taste of Lynette's honky tonk side with the incorporation of the violin, a pleasant group vocal, and great lyrics about prayer, love, and family. Though it seems an unconventional combination, Lynette Louise has put together ten inspiring tracks that draw from both jazz and honky tonk, highlighting her strong lyrical talent. Fans of either of these genres, check out this strong album from a good person.-Chris & the RadioIndy.com Review Team

"Adios San Miguel" by Hopalong (Jazz Artist from Mexico)

RadioIndy is pleased to present Hopalong with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Adios San Miguel"

"Adios San Miguel" is a collaborative instrumental jazz album that incorporates a number of jazz subgenres skillfully crafted by Mexico's own Hopalong. Hopalong, stage name of José Luis Chagoyán, is the composer of most of the songs on this album and plays the upright bass by trade. To bring his compositions to life, Hopalong collaborated with a set of solid musicians on guitar, sax, drums, piano, and clarinet to span the jazz genre. The result is a great jazz album full of tight instrumentation and a great finger-snapping, melodic sound. "Adios San Miguel" also has a great production quality that fully brings each instrument to life and gives the listener the feeling that they are sitting in a candlelit jazz club listening to Hopalong & Company. "Jungle Blues" has a great bass lick that fuels the entire song, with the sax matching notes, and the piano and drums completing the standard jazz sound. "Lunas De Mama Mia" incorporates the acoustic guitar to give the song a great flamenco and jazz fusion feel and is an incredible display of musicianship. "Adios San Miguel" is a great collaborative effort drawn from Hopalong's mind's eye to create an instant classic. Jazz lovers, you're going to want to pick this one up.-Chris & the RadioIndy.com Review Team

Day is backed by a tremendously talented cast of musicians, providing both wonderful solos and support throughout. "Singing the Great American Songbook" by jazz vocalist Ron Kaplan (for the American Songbook Preservation Society) is a live CD capturing the performance of a benefit concert given by Mr. Kaplan at The Kuumbwa Jazz Center on January 25, 2007. Kaplan is joined by the stellar musicians Marshall Otwell on the piano and Stan Poplin on bass. This release captures the sound and spirit of this live show beautifully, with each musician shining both individually and collectively. Kaplan has a gentle, swinging style of phrasing and his sidemen provide wonderful support and solos throughout. They begin the set with spirited interpretations of Duke Ellington's "Drop Me Off in Harlem" and "Solitude," with Kaplan in fine form. Otwell provides intelligent figures and swinging solos over Poplin's steady bass. Also included is a great rendition of Cole Porter's "I Get a Kick Out of You," with Kaplan's vocals dancing on top of the rhythmic piano of Otwell, anchored by the solid bass lines of Poplin. Another highlight is an enchanting version of Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer's "Out of This World," with soaring vocals from Kaplan and fiery solos by both Otwell & Poplin. "Uno" by Naima (Jazz/Rock Artist from Spain)

"Uno" is the inspiring new release from the European contemporary jazz unit Naima. The group uses an abundant array of musical elements and styles for their exploration and improvisation, drawing from many different influences and sources. The musicians establish a picture with each tune, which is then designed and shaped by the interaction between the different instruments and nurtured to completion. A good example of this is the opening track "Bicho," where the theme is first established by the piano and then developed by the other instruments. Listen to the fantastic interplay between the piano, soprano sax, and drums on the fiery "Totem." "Ana" is a quieter, gentler track, possessing expressive melodies and a more delicate, understated interaction between the musicians. "Alas Cortadas" is also a tender piece, but has a definitive pulse and groove. "Sicalipsis" is another example of the fine interplay between the musicians, weaving their own musical comments throughout the tune while still complementing each other and staying within the given framework of the music. This is an impressive album to be enjoyed by fans of improvisational and contemporary jazz reminiscent of the style of Wayne Shorter.

"Reflexos" by Rui Caetano Trio (Jazz Artist from Portugal)

"Reflexos" is the first recording from Portuguese pianist Rui Caetano and his trio, featuring Bernardo Moreira on bass and Marco Franco on drums. The album is a collection of original compositions inspired by Caetano's life experiences. Although the setting for these sessions consists of a piano trio, this is far from a traditional piano trio jazz album. The compositions are very inventive and performed in a loose, free, interactive manner by the musicians. This trio has created a flowing, highly-original sound that is not easily categorized. "Sons Reflexos" begins in a dark, shadowy manner with each musician coloring in a sparse style before fusing together into an interactive, melodic tune. "Luisa" is a soft, delicate ballad featuring an eloquent approach from Caetano, with Franco providing subtle, fitting support underneath with swishing brushes and sizzling, swirling cymbals. The broken swing of "Casa Vertical" and "Dança do Cavalo Marinho" provides an audio landscape for the musicians to be extremely interactive, floating and weaving throughout the compositions as if they were painting scenery. "O Tempo Foi" is another ballad, displaying again the gentle, expressive side of Caetano. "Oceano" is a spirited closing track, with the musicians again interacting brilliantly, showcasing their creative ability to take liberties within the tune while still functioning as one interconnected unit. This album will appeal to the jazz fan, particularly those who enjoy the piano trio performing in a non-traditional, loose and free style.

Roger Cairns' "Let's…" showcases the Scottish vocalist's ability to move seamlessly between many musical styles, settings and genres. His passion, versatility, and flexibility are on full display as he interprets jazz standards and more modern selections. The production is clean and straightforward, with the vocals upfront and Cairns being supported on most tracks by a jazz quartet consisting of piano, bass, drums, and sax, though the sax is replaced by a fitting jazzy guitar on the spirited "Gravy Waltz." The writing is skillful and intelligent with fresh, clever arrangements. She is backed by an incredible orchestra of talented musicians featuring brilliant soloists and swinging horn sections. The rhythm section is fabulous, setting up and emphasizing the ensemble figures with ease while also providing wonderful support throughout. The musicianship is of the highest order, with great horn solos and bebop lines floating on top of Santana's rhythmic and intricate percussion patterns. “Soundbox” by The Monty Casper Project (Jazz Artist from British Columbia, Canada)

"Soundbox" is a great smooth jazz/instrumental pop album from The Monty Casper Project. British Columbia multi-instrumentalist Monty Casper plays all of the instruments on this album, showing his tremendous piano talent, as well as his crafty work on drums, guitar, and horns. The songs are all instrumental and inspired by classic pop instrumentals of the '60s, '70s, and '80s from the likes of Herb Alpert and George Benson. The songs themselves are all Monty Casper originals, though he draws from the aforementioned pop instrumentalists to give the songs a certain timelessness to them. "Soundbox" is well-produced, and the entire album sounds professional, the instrumentation clean and well-layered. "Marimba Coffee Break" has a solid arrangement with a rhythmic drum beat and acoustic guitar in the background and skillful marimba work at the forefront. "Random Thoughts" shows Casper's prowess as a pianist and has a great timeless sound to it. "Searchlight" features the unique sound of the harpsichord and nice drum work. “Jazz Mass” by Jim Duff (Jazz Artist from Canada)

"Jazz Mass" is a truly unique album from the mastermind of composer/arranger Jim Duff that juxtaposes and fuses a symphonic orchestra, a big band, and a choir to create brilliant classical and jazz compositions. Duff amassed fifty-five of Newfoundland's finest musical talents, drawing mainly from the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and the Quintessential Vocal Ensemble, but also showcasing sprouted talents from in and around the community. The result is, guaranteed, something you have never heard before in your life. The fantastic vocals of the Quintessential Vocal Ensemble can stand alone like in a chamber choir or accompany the big band and classical sounds of the Orchestra, then halt for a traditional jazz composition with a sax solo. It can be sudden and contrast moods, but it is excellent, and probably for that reason. "Jazz Mass" is well-produced, and all of the diverse sounds are recorded to their utmost quality. "Gloria" well combines the chamber choir, big band orchestra, and jazz ensemble with great booming vocals that sing the chorus of the traditional hymn, and then moves into a fusion of horns with the traditional jazz sound that features a mean saxophone solo. "Beatus" begins with a great vocal performance from the Vocal Ensemble as they sing about the "Be" attitudes and then moves into a great jazz song with piano, drums, and xylophone. Jim Duff has composed and arranged a beautiful, incredibly original "Jazz Mass" that is sure to be admired by anyone who respects well-crafted music. Fans of big band, jazz, and excellent vocal ensembles will be interested to find out what this "Jazz Mass" is really all about.

“Pulse” by Dr. Otto (Jazz Artist from Florida(FL))

"Pulse" is an excellent jazz record from arranger/composer/trumpeter Dr. Otto that dabbles in experimental, Latin, and smooth jazz, as well as r&b and funk, to create an overall fresh and enjoyable sound. It's not just a stage name – Dr. Otto is the real deal. He earned his doctorate in arranging and composition from the Manhattan Conservatory of Music, and "Pulse" is a strictly professional album. Through his close attention to detail and great instrumental layering, Dr. Otto and company have crafted nine trumpet-led tracks with a variety of solid arrangements that incorporate Latin guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and other horns into the sound. "Pulse" was also produced by Dr. Otto, so is there any doubt that the record has a clean and professional sound to it? "Barcelona" introduces the album nicely with a Latin guitar intro, great instrumental layering, an underlying smooth jazz sound, and preliminary trumpet solos that show you that Dr. Otto means business. "Rock Wit Cha" is another smooth jazz track with r&b and funk elements that relies mostly on the funk bass and muted trumpet, but features great layering of the entire accompaniment. "Pulse" is a solid album led by Dr. Otto's great trumpet work that would make Miles Davis proud. Jazz aficionados one and all, you're going to want to pick this one up.

"It's Probably Me" by Vincent Lynch (Blues/Jazz artist from Ireland)

Vincent Lynch's "It's Probably Me" is an EP that features Vincent's excellent musical talents, across multiple genres, from blues to pop. There is quite a lot of variation present on this 4-track EP: It starts with a remake of "I Got the Music in Me" with a jazz-influenced piano progression dubbed with an electronica/dance sound. Next, the EP moves to a bluesy electric guitar riff fused with a solid brass section on track 2. Then, Vincent presents a simple, clean acoustic sound on track 3. And finally the EP closes out with a dance club remix version of "I Got the Music in Me." Lynch's vocals are quite similar to the blues-oriented vocals of Eric Clapton. The lyrics of the 2 original tracks are strong. The bluesy, heartbreaking "Story of the Blues" displays Lynch's lyrical prowess when he sings, "Everybody knows what the blues is all about." More aesthetically pleasing is the simple, acoustic title track, which shows Lynch at his lyrical and musical best. "It's Probably Me" is a beautiful acoustic number with a tidal wave of mood setting sounds. No matter the sound, light and acoustic or loud and electronic, the EP displays Lynch's musical talents. If you have eclectic musical tastes and enjoy hearing a new talented artist, give this EP a try. http://www.radioindy.com/bands/4586/

“Sing me a Song...please!” by Lynette Louise (Jazz Artist from California(CA))

Fans of either of these genres, check out this strong album from a good person.

“Adios San Miguel” by Hopalong (Jazz Artist from Mexico)

Jazz lovers, you're going to want to pick this one up.

"African Skies" by Joel Holmes (Jazz artist from Maryland (MD))

"African Skies" is a traditional jazz album with elements of world fusion from an extremely talented jazz pianist in Joel Holmes. Holmes collaborated with a number of skilled jazz musicians to create this album, including jazz legend Gary Thomas on saxophone and flute, outstanding Cuban percussionist Melena and the Emerald East String Quartet. The resulting arrangements are solid, all out jams. Many of the tracks on "African Skies" follow the traditional jazz sound reminiscent of Herbie Hancock, while others are in the world fusion realm, combining jazz piano with either African drums, or a string quartet to create a unique jazz fusion sound. The album and song titles suggest an element of spirituality and Holmes' compositions follow this concept nicely, making the entire album something of a journey. "African Skies" is also well-produced, with every element of each arrangement brought to life and failing to disappoint. "Impressions take 1" begins with an insane piano progression by Holmes that immediately puts him up there with great jazz pianists like Thelonious Monk and Oscar Peterson. Enjoy this one as it unfolds unfolds into a great traditional jazz number. "Chinese fishing song" features the Emerald East String Quartet, with a soaring violin coupled with Holmes on the piano, creating a unique jazz fusion sound. Gary Thomas carries "African Skies" and "Fatima" with sax and flute solos, respectively. "African Skies" is truly an original album that any jazz and jazz fusion fan should add to their collection.

"Invitation" by Jeff Jones and Mosaic (Latin/Jazz artist from Arizona (AZ))

"Invitation" is an excellent contemporary Latin jazz album from Jeff Jones and Mosaic. Jones, the leader of the group, is a saxophonist by trade and adds a smooth jazz element to the Latin jazz feel. His backing band, Mosaic, is incredible, tight and each member is held in high esteem in the Latin jazz circuit of the Southwest. Mosaic brings their wonderful talents on piano, flute, bass, and drums. Each member gets their solo opportunity, their time to lead the band and they all shine in their roles. "Invitation" is full of unselfish, improvisational and fun tracks. The underlying Latin feel of each song will give even the most unlikely of characters the urge to dance. The record is polished and crisp, with each note from each instrument sounding firm, compelling, and excellent. "Morning" opens things up with that classic and danceable Latin jazz sound with great piano and flute lines that gives you a feel for the entire album. "Favela" has a great layering of sounds with the Latin-infused piano, drum and flute, pauses a moment for a great drum solo, then picks up right where it left off. With "Invitation," Jeff Jones and Mosaic have created a great collaborative album full of Latin flare and intense solos from every instrument in the same vein of predecessors Tito Puente and Cal Tjader. Any fan of contemporary Latin jazz or, simply, any jazz fan, should add "Invitation" to their collection.

"Soul Groove" by Kyle Wolverton (Jazz artist from Los Angeles, California (CA))

"Soul Groove" is the saxophone led contemporary smooth jazz solo debut from Kyle Wolverton. Primarily an instrumental album, Wolverton drives this record with his outstanding sax skills and creates a unique sound by combining the smooth jazz sound with the heavy influence of the R&B and gospel genres. "Soul Groove" is filled with saxophone led melodies that show Wolverton's mastery and control of all three genres. Vocal performances are rare, but when Wolverton does sing, it is in the R&B style and reminiscent of Keith Sweat and Luther Vandross and occasionally accompanied by a strong R&B female vocal. The album is well-produced and gives each song that polished quality smooth jazz albums typically require. The title track, "Soul Groove," fuses together R&B and smooth jazz and gives a flush song that brings about the likeliness of Marvin Gays and Kenny G. "On The Brink" departs from the saxophone sound and incorporates acoustic guitar, drums, and hand claps in its stead, resulting in a strong, gospel-inspired vocal performance from Wolverton. Overall, "Soul Groove" is an impressive solo debut from Wolverton that shows his vocal and musical talents, as well as his ability to creatively control the sound. Fans of R&B and saxophone-driven smooth jazz should check out this album.

"Kogutud Rikkus/Collected Riches" by Tanel Ruben (Jazz artist from Estonia)

"Kogutud Rikkus/Collected Riches" is an avant garde, free-form jazz album from talented jazz drummer Tanel Ruben. Ruben is a master of experimentation, an explorer of styles, and brings you the result of his exploration with this album. The songs are all unique and feature a healthy lineup of musicians that varies depending on the instrumental makeup of each track. Even with the variance from song to song, each song remains deeply rooted in the broad jazz genre, so you still feel a sense of continuity throughout. The arrangements are all solid, with interesting layers and nuances. And the sound quality is great, so you can break out the headphones with this one. Highlights include the opener, "So Long," a dirty track with unconventional progressions, odd changes, and great creative choices. The title track, "Kotugud Rikkus," is a smooth lounge number with a sultry female vocal. "Snake Song" features strange and quirky electronic elements and another fine arrangement. An album like "Kogutud Rikkus/Collected Riches" is a tough thing to accomplish, and Ruben does it well, with great arrangements centered around his talent as a jazz drummer and as a jazz composer. "Vegas Suite" by Frank Fabio (Jazz artist from Nevada)

"Vegas Suite" is a funky smooth jazz album that features fantastic guitar and bass work from multiinstrumentalist Frank Fabio. The album as a whole is very upbeat and refreshing with catchy, well layered, and diverse arrangements. Fabio is a pro at feeling out the different energies in his work, and he definitely puts his veteran skills on display with this album. The cornerstone of any instrumental album is the ability to tell a story without the addition of lyrics, and Fabio very much succeeds at that with "Vegas Suite." Fabio is also a great musician, both on bass and guitar, and has a full understanding of music. Highlights include "Love Is," a perfect example of instrumental storytelling that almost paints a picture of love in your mind. "Yes and No" is a wonderfully erratic number that showcases Frank's ability as a bassist and features some excellent piano and drum work as well. "Battleboy" is a loungy number with a house beat and relaxing atmospheric elements. "Vegas Suite" is an impressive album from Frank Fabio that showcases his talents both as a multiinstrumentalist and as a musical storyteller. If you enjoy listening to stylistic, musically diverse jazz artists, give this album a listen.

“The Blessing” by Larry Randall (Spiritual/Jazz artist from Texas)

"The Blessing" is a four CD, eighty-six song spiritually inspiring, contemporary jazz gospel box set from Larry Randall. Randall believes that he was called upon to minister the word of God with music, to express the Holy Ghost within him through song in hopes of inspiring the Holy Ghost in his listener. Not surprisingly, all eighty-six songs are filled with religious imagery and spiritual, joyous, Biblical, and even prophetic lyrics. Vocally, Randall is a crooner, and at times sounds similar to Frank Sinatra and Michael Bublé. The arrangements are typically simple and soft, so as not to overshadow Randall's message, but they are great collaborative efforts that hail from a variety of genres, including smooth jazz, big band, gospel, soul, Latin, Hindi, rock & roll, and R&B. The recording quality of "The Blessing" is quite good, and the arrangements and vocals both sound polished and professional. "We Are Home" is a slow smooth jazz number with smooth saxophone solos and lyrics of faith and unity. "Speak of His Joy" is a big band tune you could swear was actually being sung by Sinatra, and has more religious imagery about salvation and grace. "His Name is Jesus" has a great jazz arrangement as Randall pilfers through all of the names for Jesus. "Stand" is a fast-paced song with a Hindi-music-inspired arrangement and a group chant vocal. "Faithful and True" is a gospel song with a great organ-led arrangement and is a conversation between Randall and Jesus. "The Blessing" is a bold box set with great arrangements and ministering lyrics, and is it mere coincidence that it is a Bible-sized effort? Fans of contemporary jazz gospel looking to worship God through song, pick up Larry Randall's box set.

Get ready to hit the beach with this innovative self titled jazz-infused instrumental surf album from The Sea Turtles. This Pennsylvania based three piece band relies strictly on guitar, bass, and drums to entertain your ears. The recording quality gives a similar feel; one could imagine The Sea Turtles booming through a speaker, live or recorded, at either location. This album shows The Sea Turtles superb improvisational skills, as well as their influences, which range from the Beach Boys on guitar to the classical jazz sound on drums and bass doubtlessly influenced by a plethora of jazz predecessors. "Fastback" creates a great smooth sound with jazz guitar and classic drum and bass lines. "Paragon" features a quick tempo and presents more of a rock feel as it begins with the bassist matching every note the guitar plays. "Winds of Time" by Dr. David Klee (Jazz artist from Iowa)

"Winds of Time" is a new age smooth jazz album highlighted by the feel-good flute styling of Dr. David Klee, which at once reminds the listener of Herbie Mann's jazzy flute styles. Klee's musicianship is superior, and his arrangements are refreshingly pleasant. The album features a good mix of moods with touches of various voices and themes. As a whole, the songs present an upbeat feel while sending you off into a dream world. With the flute at the forefront, the instrumental variety from the backing band gives each song its own identity, each sounding vastly different from the next. Highlights include the opener, "Atlanta City Nights," a very upbeat track with a distinctive flute line that will liven up any room. The title track, "Winds of Time," opens with some dramatic organic sounds and works its way into a mystery-filled dreamscape. "Missing You So Much" features a nice piano progression and has a bit of an Asian feel to it. If you like new age jazz or beautiful flute-led lullabies, you will enjoy this one.
