"Silent Words" by the highly talented artist Thomas Frykberg is an easy listening and elevating Jazz crossover album. Frykberg takes an open-ended approach on the genre with various melodic melodies and the experimentation of different types of percussion to accompany the traditional drum set. "Doniazade" is a very exotic and quintessential jazz track as it employs an interesting melody on the saxophone combined with other inspired timbres and chimes. This track also shows the artist's ability to adapt to changing and various styles all the while keeping it fresh and innovating. Another song, "Celebration Nr 2," is extremely interesting in that the track is played in a classic Jazz style as the sax deftly plays the melody while the subtle African style percussive beats play with fascinating tonality. "The Face of My Love" by Ken Greves (Jazz Artist from New York City, New York(NY))

On his new CD, "The Face of My Love," inspired Jazz singer, Ken Greves, exhibits the class and tastefulness that is pure, traditional Jazz. The accompanying band is comprised of light percussion and a very skilled piano, leaving room for the rich and seasoned tone of the vocalist. On the track "Where Have You Been," the singer plays the role of a bit of a smart alec in his delivery as the piano plays with sass in the background, providing an appropriate accompaniment. The classic, "Witchcraft-that Old Black Magic," was wonderfully redone; Greves' delivers a vocal performance as authentic as the original. It's completely upscale and exquisitely done down to the last note. At the close of the album a track titled "Don't Look Back" is sure to have the listener wanting much more from this fine performer. It is a ballad that exemplifies the talent and vocal range of the artist, with wonderful piano accompaniment. If you like small jazz combo vocals, Ken Greves' "The Face of My Love" CD is a must to check out.

"Q.E.D." is the latest album released by the prolific guitarist and composer, James Kennedy. The musical style on this new CD has been described as "Midwestern Contemporary Music," since it is really an amalgam of jazz, blues, and folk, all led by James' playing on the 6 and 12 string guitar. Yet he also incorporates a good amount of Latin and World music influences, so it is a difficult album to quickly describe. "Down To the River" is a slower, folksy tune that uses the violin and guitar to paint a mental picture of antiquated American river life. Then, in "Raiders of the Silk Road," we have a very different tune, in which ambient noises and exotic sounds are used to create a feeling that's straight out of The Arabian Nights. For "Your Love Spell," James opts to let the guitar do the talking in a smooth and pleasant love song. "Q.E.D." is perfect for those who enjoy instrumental albums that can paint pictures of different places in your mind. It is also a great album for those who enjoy the guitar and violin, as there are many instances of beautifully played interactions between the two instruments.

With her supple, three octave vocal range and the instincts of a seasoned vet, the Australian born and world-traveled, pianist and singer/songwriter simply delights on this 11-song collection of pop, jazz, and easy listening songs. "uncut & lo-fi" is the 5th and latest release from the Swedish group of 9 musicians known as Reform. They have been described as "Swedish psychedelic jazz-rock for the open minded." But what this album really sounds like is excited instrumental psychedelic garage-rock that takes cues from jazz in its improvisation and sense of order. The opener, "Lion Bar," is a wild track with boisterous and echo-laced drums, plus a plethora of instruments and sounds that makes for an energetic clamor skillfully placed somewhere between music and noise. In "Uncle Urri 2" they slow things down with a more reserved blues beat overlaid with soulful, yet highly spacey, harmonica and guitar playing. For "Spooky" they give us a song that sounds like a blend of jazz and jam-band styled rock, recorded loudly in their unique "lo-fi" manner. Equal parts jazz and instrumental psychedelic / progressive rock, Reform's debut CD, "Reformed," charts a middle ground that ably fuses classic styles and influences - with an unusual twist. With a stellar 6-piece ensemble behind him, harmonica player Àlvaro Fernandez Gavíria's full, lower-octave playing serves as a primary lead instrument for much of the album. With studied restraint, Gaviria's tone – which recalls that of accomplished blues harp-stylist, Corky Siegel, approaches his instrument like a fusion-oriented Miles Davis, drawing out found harmonics within the framework of the band's rich and melodic songscapes. Guitarists Johan Glasson and Peter Åkerberg create the underpinning for Reform's – at times, Steely Dan-like jazz-rock sound, while drummers Anders Bergman and Åke Eriksson provide the forward thrust, effectively filling passages with deft and meticulous hits and textures. Not to go unmentioned, bassist Jesper Bergman and keyboard player, Magnus Ramel's contributions are no less vital - and noteworthy, to Reform's decidedly adventurous leanings. Regardless of whether it's fusion jazz or spacey art rock, Reform's CD is a terrific set of original music by unique players with unbounded skills.

"Fun Out of Life" is the most recent release from the fabulous and highly talented Jazz vocalist, April Hall. Hall's voice has the ability to not only be in constant key but also adds considerable spice to each variety of Jazz song she attempts; which range from soulful ballads, to bluesy renditions, to high energy pieces. In "Crazy He Calls Me," April interacts with some well played Jazz piano and just a dash of drums to deliver a mellow tune that shows off how her voice can be warm and inviting. Another song, "Boogie Woogie Blues (I May Be Wrong)" Hall gets a little groovier with a toe tapping, more Bluesy beat accompanied by a dynamic singing style. On "Another Monday Night," the latest CD from Swingadelic, the accomplished "little" big band from the NY area shines as an ensemble as much as they do a collection of prolific soloists, proving the timelessness of sparkling and proficient jazz in an era when it sometimes feels like the great American invention has been marginalized. Bristling with solos of melody and bravura – like the stratospheric tenor of "Dance With You" or the deft piano skills of the "Puttin' On the Ritz"-like "Early Morning Special" – this group resembles no less a band (though half the size) than the famed Count Basie Orchestra, investing each number with volleys of inspired but precise mayhem. Can they swing? Absolutely! Their take on Ellington's "The Gal From Joe's" is insistent and nuanced. Can they get down and dirty? The dynamics of the Basie-esque "Buddy's Thang" make that a resounding "yes." What about the blues? They've got it covered. "Busy Body Blues" and "Big Band Blues" are steeped in the language and phraseology of the idiom's best practitioners. They do vocals too: "Back In New York City" is an excellent original, praising the city that never sleeps with a treatment that is both classic and contemporary – or, if you will, timeless. The music and playing on Swingadelic's latest disc "Another Monday Night," will want you hearing more of this swinging jazz with the kind of flair, melody, and dynamics to stir the heart and move the feet.

Twirling Jonathan Katz's nimble and deft piano accompaniment around her finger like an alluring chanteuse, Andrea Hopkins explores Vocal Jazz styles in a voice as emotive as it is beguiling on their engaging and very fine CD, "Happy Talk." Tackling a collection of primarily Great American Songbook standards – from Hoagy Carmichaels' "The Nearness of You," to Harold Arlen's immortal "Over the Rainbow," to Ray Noble's "Cherokee," Hopkins & Katz neatly strike a balance between provocative interpretations and familiar readings, proving how much life is still left in these old warhorses. Nevertheless, covering such standards as these (as well as "Bye Bye Blackbird" or "Misty") can be a double-edged sword for performers, exposing - as it does, new renditions to the harsh glow of comparison (i.e., to the Sinatra's, Fitzgerald's, and Garlands et al whose voices defined the songbook.) To their credit, the duo handles the challenge with assurance and no lack of self- confidence. Hopkins' voice is equal parts sultry, evocative, and pitch perfect, while Katz' keys delve the melodic and harmonic possibilities of these classic tunes with intelligence and nuance, but always in a manner that allows Hopkins room to interpret. In sum, the combined talents and sheer musicality of Andrea Hopkins & Jonathan Katz make "Happy Talk" an endearing and completely satisfying CD.
